Bisq suddenly failing to connect to Tor

Hi - since a few days ago I have been getting the following error message when I attempt to open Bisq. This started after I shut down my PC one night because Bisq had crashed, and since then I’m getting this when I attempt to open it (after it momentarily says “Tor node created”):

Warning
Connection to the Bitcoin network failed because of an error: org.bitcoinj.wallet.DeterministicUpgradeRequiredException

When I click the “close” button to that alert, the app states in red “Connection failed to Bitcoin Mainnet (via Tor)”. It then tries but fails to continue loading, before eventually going to a screen that prompts me to delete my old Tor files if login problems are persisting. I have tried doing so, but the problem recurs.

The app isn’t getting to the point of asking me for my password, which in the past always happened shortly after I opened it.

I have tried reinstalling the client installation file (V1.9.21) and selecting “repair” files, but again to no avail. Using a VPN also isn’t helping. And I’ve turned off my firewall.

I do not believe Tor has been newly blocked by my ISP - OONI Probe says it’s working fine on my desktop, and I’m also able to use the Tor mobile app on my WiFi network.

Any help appreciated! I love Bisq

Try doing an SPV resync.

Hi - I just tried resyncing SPV from the file system as per Resyncing SPV file - Bisq Wiki but I still get the same error when booting up Bisq. It just won’t connect to Tor?

(I should also say that I’ve tried the option given to use a recommended bridge - but again, this failed to fix the problem.)

Hi, I started getting the same error today. I’ve tried SPV resync as well as the Last resort restore but neither solved it. Anything else I can try? Thank you!

if this is still affecting you, it would be appreciated if you come over to matrix at bisq.chat and share your application logs by contacting an official support staff member via DM

I was able to fix it, I’m sharing what I had to do:

It turns out it was my BSQ wallet that got somehow corrupted. I noticed a few recent backups in btc_mainnet/wallet/backup/backups_bisq_BSQ_wallet in the data directory were only about 1 kB, while older ones were about 100 kB. So I took the latest older one with normal size, also took a bisq_BTC.wallet backup from the same date and used them to replace the respective .wallet files in btc_mainnet/wallet. I also removed bisq.spvchain in the same location.

This fixed the startup error. To be sure it doesn’t happen again, I then followed the steps to create a new wallet.
